Nutritional Labels
So you’re drinking super healthy vegetable juice all day long, every day. Great! Or, perhaps it’s not actually that great. Unfortunately, even foods that seem like they are super healthy for us actually have some unhealthy components that we’re not even aware of. For example, that vegetable juice that you’ve been slugging down is probably pretty high in sodium (salt). Although we do indeed require salt in our diets, you can definitely have too much of a good thing in this instance. This is especially true when you consider how much salt you put on your meals and how often salt is snuck into so many of our favorite foods. But don’t worry, all you need to do is check out the nutrition labels on the foods you’re looking to buy and they will provide just about all the vital information you need to know before you eat.
Nutrition labels are those white panels on the sides of packaged foods, featuring several main categories and corresponding percentages. (Fruits and vegetables don’t have nutrition labels because they are all-natural, having no processed or unnatural elements). Nutrition labels help breakdown foods into important segments, which helps people decide on how healthy that particular food or beverage is. The negative attributes to look for are sodium, fat, cholesterol and sugar. Although we do need some fats, salt and sugar in our diets, there are good and bad kinds of each, and we must be very careful to avoid the bad ones. For example, if a sugar source reads something like fructose or sucrose, these are refines sugars and very bad for our bodies. But if the sugar comes from fruit sources, then that type of sugar is actually good for us.
